It's not so much a style, but rather a perception of a timeless, established residence that has withstood the test of time and generations of residents. Drummond: Oakland Restaurant Week caters to foodies Restaurants seem to open in Oakland in waves. I was away for a year and returned last summer to find a whole new group had appeared. Restaurants are opening at such a rapid pace that city officials have a hard time keeping track in real time. By the end of 2013, there were more than 1,700 restaurants and bars serving food in the city. That was a 186 percent jump over 2008. A dizzying 300 new restaurants and bars have opened since 2013, according to Visit Oakland, the city's tourism arm.
